Even more startling that the fish (granted, that is one crazy idea), was the history of the oh-so-polluted Thames. I'd heard it was bad, but not that it was that bad. Eww.
I'm almost surprised that the Thames has avoided catching fire. Then again, most of the pollution has been organic rather than oil-based...but, yeah. Urgh. If you drop something in that river, just give it up for lost...
I'm sorry, but, isn't looking for pollution in the Thames like looking for hay in a haystack? Can't you just look at the haystack and say, "Hey, there's some hay!"
