Everyone's talking, so why not me?
There's been a lot of discussion about the recent Doctor Who news, and I didn't really want to jump in and discuss at first. If you've managed to avoid the news, you have much more restraint and self-discipline than I have, and I'll put the discussion under a cut of course.
I've hoped for and dreaded the news of Billie Piper's return for a long time. Hoped for because I love Rose as a character and felt there were a lot of loose ends between her and the Doctor, and dreaded because if they screw it up, I'll be furious. Better to leave a storyline and a character at loose ends than to betray them with a trite ending.
Now, I do trust RTD to some extent -- but Doomsday broke my heart, and, after all, this is the man who brought us Dobby!Doctor and Tinkerbell!Doctor. He, to his credit, also brought us Utopia and The Sound of Drums. The reunion of the Doctor and Jack was as fantastic as I hoped it would be. It dealt frankly with the issues surrounding the Doctor's abandonment of Jack, and didn't shy away from the emotional consequences for both of them. I can only hope we have this kind of resolution with Rose.
I don't think it will come to a shock to anyone that I'm a Doctor/Rose shipper. I prefer Ten/Rose because, while I love Nine (he was my first Doctor, after all), I think their relationship is more intimate. I mean that in the sense of personal intimacy, which can be distinct from physical intimacy. These are two people who were wrapped up in each other to a very large degree. Their story didn't feel finished to me.
I am pleased that we're (apparently) going to see some meeting of the various companions. Whether that means just Donna and Rose or Donna, Martha, and Rose, I think that's a good thing. All three have very different relationships with the Doctor and I suspect that he's in for a great deal of trouble if they meet. (Heh.)
So ... what am I saying?
I'm apprehensive. I have a huge case of "I'll believe it when I see it." I'm amusingly, self-absorbedly thinking about the impact on my own personal canon. (And on that note, yes, I'm still working on The Hidden Well and have plans for a few other stories in the same continuity. So I'm now officially AU. I was pretty close before. Whatever.)
I want Mickey and Jackie back, too.

As I've said elsewhere, throw Jackie in that mix and call it a party. Anyone for popcorn?

The comic potential is amazing. It's like slapping bookends.

And, as I've said elsewhere, I want my TARDIS Pedicure Party with Rose, Martha, Donna and just for the heck of it, Sarah Jane, gossiping about the Doctor and being girly.
And Jack is their cabana boy.
And the Doctor is outside with the Enormous Pout of Rassion.

Jack would totally paint his toenails.

I enjoyed series 3 (even, at points, the generally-detestable Dalek episodes) and it was worth watching. I don't watch because of Rose -- although I enjoyed the dynamic between her and the Doctor.
Without S3 you've missed so much. The Doctor and Donna on Segways. Brannigan and the Face of Boe. Jack. Human Nature. I could go on.
I'd love to have Rose back but I'm with the show for the duration regardless.

I have believed that Rose would return ever since it was announced that she was leaving, and earlier in the year, I wrote an essay detailing (and attempting to evidence) my reasons for believing that her story was far from over. Therefore , I was delighted (albeit, not surprised) at this news, but also a little apprehensive. There is so much potential here for amazing storylines which need not result in another heartbreak - it's sci-fi after all and I hope RTD does justice to their characters and relationship. I truly believe that he has cultivated a character of greater significance than a companion, in Rose (ducks as anti-D/R shippers throw things)and as such, her place within the new series will be as fundamental to the show as the Doctor's.
Sorry, Kalleah - didn't mean to hijack you thread...
Looking forward to your next chapter! :o)

It was heartbreaking, and the level of emotional involvement that so many people does indicate that RTD succeeded with what he was trying to do. It still hurts, though.
You're right about the rest. There's so much potential.

I, too, hope they refrain from a trite ending. Rose is such a fantastic character, she deserves better. I've said this about Martha too. She didn't really get her due until SOD and LotTL.

Is it April yet?
