Drabble #2: Margarita Salt

lillynn stumped me in the Whofic meme, so I wrote a drabble for her. She requested something with "10's oral fixation, and something vaguely intoxicating with a humorous possibly embarrassing outcome." Here you go, dear. This was fun.

This references an incident discussed in chapter six of The Hidden Well, in which the Doctor doesn't tell Rose that the sweet she's enjoying is actually caramelized, fermented insect larvae.  (Eww.)

The Doctor ran his tongue around the lip of the glass. He pulled a terrible face and stuck his tongue out, attempting to get it as far away from him as possible.

Rose laughed and took a sip of her own drink, which was tart and faintly sweet, and yes, salty.

"Never had a margarita before?"

He glared at the offending crystals coating the rim of glass. "Salt?" he whinged. "A frozen, fruity drink, and you put salt in it?" He smacked his tongue against the roof of his mouth.

She had her revenge for the insect larvae, it seemed.

Err, folks, is eating fermented, carmelized insect larvae REALLY all that much more disgusting than eating honey?? And I think in Japan people eat chocolate covered ants.

Like it or not, by the way, a great many people, especially in the Third World, eat insects. There is a book I would have been very happy to read if only it had no pictures called Man Eating Bugs.

Mind you, I AM a vegetarian.

A margarita, minus salt, I think, was my very first drink on my 21st birthday. I think I drank about half an inch of it.

Nope. It's all about the cultural bias. The Doctor might not think anything at all odd about eating said larvae, so why point it out to Rose?

As a person who has been accused of buying margaritas just so she can lick off the salt (because people tend to look at you oddly when you poor salt in your hand and lick it if you don't have tequila) I must say that this fic completely mystifies me.

My mother will sprinkle salt onto the palm of her hand and eat it straight, which gives me a major case of the heebie-jeebies. To each her own. :)
