Was your friend perhaps watching Eccleston by mistake? I mean, I personally find him quite attractive, but he has the sort of distinctive face that could fail to resonate with the less discriminating viewer. :)
As for the grunt, I think it was more of a "you'll break it if I don't intervene" moment. But you can read it as jealousy. There are certainly small boys clamoring for attention from Rose.
