From the moment Rose stepped through the doorway in the hospital in Voyages of Discovery, I've wanted to come back to Jackie's POV.  There will be some inevitable questions stemming from this vignette in particular, so let me assure you before you even read it that I'm not done with Jackie's story yet.  This is simply one part of that tale.

Spoilers through Doomsday and for my stories The Calm Before The Storm and Voyages of Discovery.

Thanks as always to [personal profile] ivydoor and [personal profile] platypus.for their beta work on these.

Jackie Tyler.

"A wheelchair?" said Jackie Tyler incredulously.

"It's hospital policy, ma'am," said the nurse, attired in scrubs dotted with panda bears and balloons. "When a patient is released, we take them downstairs in a wheelchair."

"I've walked around this ward a dozen times," she protested in vain, "and I've never needed a wheelchair before!"

The nurse looked helplessly at Pete, who leaned against the doorjamb with a distracted look on his face. "Jacks," he said quietly, his voice not a question or a command. "She's just doing her job."

Jackie softened. "All right then, but can I keep the baby with me?" Her daughter was asleep, despite the shrill voice of her mother, her tiny face barely visible amidst all the fleece bundling around her.

"Of course," soothed the nurse, her face flushing in visible relief. "Her things are all here and ready to go."

Another nurse appeared in the hallway behind Pete. "Your driver is downstairs, sir," she told him. He nodded and she slipped away. Behind her, in the hallway, Jackie could see the wheelchair, with "Hospital Property" stamped in huge letters on the fabric back.

She handed the baby to Pete and let the nurse take her arm to guide her into the chair. Once she was situated, Pete gave the bundle of baby and fabric back to her.

"We're going on a little ride now, and then we're going home," she cooed softly as Pete began to push her down the hallway.

"There's been no word from the search," he said quietly to her as they waited for the lift.

"Won't be," she said, snuggling her daughter closer against her. The baby made a single hiccup and fluttered her eyelashes. "We know where she is."

Pete didn't answer. She knew he wouldn't believe without hard evidence, and that was as it should be for a man like him. She was Rose's mother, and she knew the only thing that would have kept Rose from seeing her baby sister born was the chance to see the Doctor again.

The lift door opened, and the three of them entered. As the door slid shut, the baby began to cry.
