Human Nature

My mouth hung open at one point in this episode, and if you read my story The Calm Before The Storm, you might understand why.

First of all, I've always thought our Tenth Doctor was an artist.  And his drawing of Rose ... sigh.

This I quote from chapter four of The Calm Before The Storm, which I wrote back in early February.  I apparently channeled the future.

Rose's eyes flicked down to his pad and saw with some astonishment that he had flipped to another page and begun to sketch her.  A face emerged in lines on the page, then the hair almost seeming to blow in the breeze around it.  He worked confidently, easily.  Eyes crinkled in laughter, then the mouth, smiling.  A lovely face, caught in a moment of delight.  Her face, but stronger and brighter and sharper and more beautiful.

"You're good," she said admiringly, a blush spreading across her cheeks.  "But it's too pretty to be me."

He looked up, his dark eyes veiled beneath his lashes.  "It looks like you to me," he said softly.

Rose's breath caught in her chest.  Here it was, another intimate moment, certainly to be foiled by an interruption, or a shift in his mood, or a daft statement from her that would send him off behind the walls he carefully tended between them.  She decided to simply be sincere.  "Thank you," she said, and smiled again.  He lowered his head and worked some finishing touches on the sketch, filling in shadows and background.  She watched, transfixed, as he used his thumb to softly smudge a bit, the tenderness of his gesture working magic on her.

Oh, Paul Cornell totally ripped you off! You should sue. Or you know, ask for some time alone with David Tennant. Or hire you as a writer. Whatever works for you.

[identity profile] kalleah.livejournal.com 2007-05-27 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
Ha. How about Rose coming back? Or him going to her. I can live with either.

[identity profile] misssara11.livejournal.com 2007-05-27 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
Whatever you want. You deserve something for so blatantly being ripped off. You need compensation.

[identity profile] kalleah.livejournal.com 2007-05-27 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
No ulterior motive there for you, eh? :)

[identity profile] misssara11.livejournal.com 2007-05-27 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
You know if I get something out if great. But you know I just thinking of you. Honestly.

*tries to look innocent and sincere, even busts out the ICON OF DEATHLY CUTENESS*

Cornell is stalking your LJ. *spooky music*

[identity profile] kalleah.livejournal.com 2007-05-27 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
Was something along those lines in the original novel? I haven't read it. I don't know how much follows along with the original storyline.

[identity profile] ivydoor.livejournal.com 2007-05-27 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
I have no clue. I never read it, either.

[identity profile] dark-aegis.livejournal.com 2007-05-27 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yes it was. *nods* Seven, er, John Smith had a journal wherein he wrote fan fiction about these dreams/ideas he had. I don't recall if he had drawings in it, though. I think he did. I'd have to crack open the book again to check.

There are differences between the two (as there has to be since it was originally a Seventh Doctor story), like Ten became human to hide whereas Seven did it to better understand his companion, Benny. There are far more from this first episode, but I'd have to wait until next week's episode to know for certain.

I can tell even from the bare bones outline that is my understanding of the novel that there are significant differences, and that makes sense, give the very different circumstances.

There really wasn't any moment like that in the original story, and yes, I thought of you :). In the book, Smith wrote fiction about Gallifrey, which was occasionally quoted, but he never sketched Joan. Benny painted, but only the garden of the place she was staying.

I think I might have to read that book again! I know he wrote fan fiction about Gallifrey, but I couldn't remember if he'd sketched in there.

Benny, now, that I remember well. *loves Benny*

Okay. That's good to know. I don't mind inadvertently channeling a future ep ... I just hate to inadvertently channel an existing novel. :)

Oooh, very cool, Kalleah!

[identity profile] kalleah.livejournal.com 2007-05-28 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Mine had Rose.

[identity profile] bluevolvic.livejournal.com 2007-05-27 09:21 am (UTC)(link)
how cool! :D,lets hope they take more ideas from your fics for future eps :D

Heh. We'll have to see how that goes.

John Smith the artist

[identity profile] nightbeast.livejournal.com 2007-05-27 11:10 am (UTC)(link)
You, too? I had artist!Ten with Queen of Hearts (http://nightbeast.livejournal.com/80755.html) in January, and then again with Eyes Open (http://nightbeast.livejournal.com/91015.html). I maintain that the BBC stole my identity, what with having a mole between my shoulder blades and a middle name of Rose...

Bonus points to you, though, for channelling the dialogue in the scene. :D

Could be, could be. :)

That is just...spooky! You need to demand compensation in the form of a Doctor/Rose reunion. That should be, like, all of season four. And your name in the credits. SAME DIALOGUE. SPOOKY, I SAY!

[identity profile] kalleah.livejournal.com 2007-05-28 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I just want a reunion. Damn it, I don't even have to see it if they just tell us it happened.

[identity profile] blackcat-1.livejournal.com 2007-05-31 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I noticed that plot-napping too. Like you, I’d settle for reuniting them as compensation…
Did Human Nature get your brain working overtime and cause you start putting pieces of the puzzle together for the series finale? It did for me. I’m keeping schtum about my theory, as I’ve not seen anyone else suggest what I’m thinking, but I’m so hoping I’m right…

[identity profile] kalleah.livejournal.com 2007-06-01 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
It's parallel development. I love it.

Bits and pieces. I have several theories, and I love the process of unwinding everything and seeing where they're going. It's incredibly entertaining whether or not I am actually right. :)

[identity profile] sideways.livejournal.com 2007-06-10 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I was planning on leaving a comment somewhere in your journal for this episode after watching it, because he was sketching her and, and he said that line, and I was pretty floored for a few seconds. Because the only thing I could think about was, "Haven't I read that somewhere else before?"

Lo and behold - the BBC steals fanfiction. It's not just paranoia anymore. ;)

[identity profile] kalleah.livejournal.com 2007-06-10 07:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh heh heh. I wish I could claim that, but it's parallel development. Another alluring prospect would be that I had advance access to scripts, but damn the man, that's not true either. Ah well.
