WIP meme

Snagged from [personal profile] eponymous_rose , a brilliant idea which I take zero credit for:

This is something I've concocted primarily because I want confirmation that I'm not the only one with a folder full of half-finished fiction on my desktop that might never get written at this rate. So here you are! The Work-in-Progress Meme! When you see this, post a little weensy excerpt from as many random works-in-progress as you can find lying around. Who knows? Maybe inspiration will burst forth and do something, um, inspiration-y.

A dream sequence I cut from Voyages of Discovery because it just didn't work at all there, but I've held onto it. Eventually, it may be its own story. Rose's POV.

The flash of white light all around and the almost instantaneous crack of thunder caused her to duck down. Her nostrils filled with the sharp smell of ozone. She tried to remember the advice she had been given on thunderstorms and knew the last place she wanted to be was on the top of a treeless hill. She stumbled down the hill. Even the small rocks scattered in the grass stabbed at the bottom of her feet and she ignored the discomfort, finding the lowest spot she could spot in the empty grassland around her and dropping to her knees. She curled up into a ball, hands curled protectively around her head.

Cut from The Hidden Well:

Rose could have filled volumes with the sentences he didn't finish.  She knew what he meant, though, and it wasn't about the innuendo in his words.  These days, she couldn't stop herself reaching for his hand, slipping an arm around him, or making any of the countless other gestures that tied them together.  They had always been physically affectionate with one another, but there was a degree of need in their touches that was new.

A tease of a very-nearly-completed vignette that I'll post after The Hidden Well is finished:

Jacob, to Rose's amusement, took a single biscuit and nibbled on it as delicately as a rather stout, bald man could be said to nibble.  His puffy beard waggled in the air as he chewed.  She knew he occasionally afforded himself such small luxuries despite his ascetic lifestyle.  For one, the Doctor supplied him with Refallan tobacco, which Rose had seen him pack into a dark wooden pipe but never smoke.  Tea, apparently, was not a luxury.

The refrains from a somewhat fictional perspective story, not at all fanfiction:

When I was a child, said Salome,
I saw with a child's eyes. I thought with a child's mind.

When I was a child, said Salome,
I loved with a child's heart. I wept with a child's tears.

When I was a child, said Salome,
I danced with a child's feet. I touched with a child's hands.

Oh, what a cool idea!

Snagging it myself to post once I've caught up with the flist.

I’m so glad you posted this thread, because there are some things I really wanted to say, but wasn’t sure whereabouts I could. This seems as good a place as any…
This week, I treated myself to the luxury of reading through ‘The Calm Before the Storm,’ and ‘Voyages of Discovery’ in succession. Now, as I’m sure you know, I was reading both of these when they were WIP’s and I thought they were wonderful then. However, reading them again made me appreciate just how exceptional your series, ‘The Process of Becoming’ is. My reading prompted these questions:

1. The heartbreaking epilogue at the end of TCBTS, where the Doctor revisits the cottage, seems to mirror what Rose sees out of the corner of her eye when she is in the mirror room in VoD. Did you do this deliberately? By that, I mean were the movements Rose saw, the movements of the Doctor in that epilogue scene?

2. You wrote a thread a while ago about your own canon for ‘The Process of Becoming.’ Among many other things, you said that Jackie was prepared for Rose to leave her, for the Doctor when they arrived at Bad Wolf Bay and also that the Doctor truly believed that he would never see Rose again. I was just wondering if you formulated these views purely with your own series in mind, of if they stemmed from what you saw in the series (because the points you made, I also agreed with, from the perspective of the series canon.)

3. You have said that Rose cannot get pregnant in your universe – fair enough, as I can certainly see the advantages of this… ;o) but what’s your take on that particular part of the conversation in ‘Doomsday’? Part of me has always felt that it would be fitting that the woman so dear to him may turn out to be the key to the continuation of his race (of sorts).

So, why am I giving you the third degree? Well, quite simply, your works are now so exhaustive, yet for me, they remain so unfailingly true to the characters, that it feels you have based it on your interpretation of the series canon (which happens to be pretty much identical to mine!) At no point, in the (now) hundreds of pages, do I think, “hmm, not sure about that…” It’s more like, “oh, I can so see that happening!” That really is quite an achievement. The unstinting attention to detail in every chapter has such a synergistic effect; we truly see everything through the eyes of the characters (which you illustrated to great effect in ‘Perception’) so much so that we ‘live’ the experience.

I’m loving ‘The Hidden Well’ and the Doctor/Rose moments are gorgeous. You have proved that even when sexual tension between two characters is resolved, with good writing, it is possible to keep the flame alive and retain that sense of anticipation (I love the way Rose keeps him on his toes…) Please keep writing in this universe forever, because whilst there are some very good fics out there, this is truly in a league of its own.
::Quiet little nudge, nudge, wink, wink in RTD’s direction – if you’re looking for someone to take the helm for S5, I think I know someone…::
