The Song of Yarru, Epilogue
Previous Chapters
...
Years before, Thomas Wynter had told the Yarruni of the sky, of the vast expanses of space and stars above them, and some had laughed to hear of such a wild tale. Even on the darkest nights, only a fraction of the sky was visible through the thick canopy of the trees.
"Climb," urged Aiku, and the Yarruni climbed.
Using their innate balance and their prehensile tails, as many people climbed above the platforms into the trees as could manage. Below them, their children and elders waited for their return.
They went up until the branches that supported them began to bow under their weight, and when that happened, the two Tree Singers sang them wider and stronger. In the end, perhaps two dozen Yarruni, including the twins and their husband, clung to the tallest of trees and stared into the yawning open night with its thousands of sparkling stars.
They sang the knowledge of the stars back to their kin and the stranger who stood with them until the entire city thrummed with the awareness. Hands and tails intertwined and children were pulled up onto shoulders to aim their faces in the direction of the new song.
When the blue bright star flashed, the song sharpened, and far above, the departing TARDIS hummed in counterpoint.
