For [livejournal.com profile] 2nd2ndalto  for the commentary meme. Feel free to go there and suggest something else! Original story here.

You go to my master list and pick a one-shot, or a single chapter of one of my multichapters, and comment to this post with your selection. I have links to commentaries I've done previously along with the story link on the master list, so no fair picking something I've already commentated upon (unless it's a different chapter of a multi-chapter story) . I then (as a separate post) do a commentary about that fic, which may or may not include canon meta, wondering what on Earth I was thinking, tmi, and general arsing around.

Icon meme

Snagged from [livejournal.com profile] platypus and [livejournal.com profile] karenor.  Icon memes are such fun.

If you could have me write a fic specifically for you, what would it be like? Fandom (duh), characters/pairing, genre, plot elements, kinks... what's your ideal fic from me?

I promise nothing but I'll think about it. I need to get writing again.
kalleah: (calvin concise writer)
1.) Go to my master list and pick out a line or two from one of my stories. (Must be a full line, please -- no sentence fragments or speech tags or other such nonsense.)

2.) I will respond with which story of mine I think it's from.

3.) A drabble (or as near as I can come to one) to anyone who stumps me. If you do stump me, feel free to request a situation and characters.  The only thing off limits is the immediate aftermath of Tenses and Pronouns, which I am currently writing (although further future is fine).

I am secretly leery that no one wants to play so .... play?

ETA: UNCLE.
kalleah: (FTW!)

I'm very flattered by the nomination and win. I'm going to nominate some of my own favorites for round two and am carefully making my selections now.

In celebration, the timestamp meme (snagged from [livejournal.com profile] unfolded73):

Give me one of my own stories (that link goes to my masterlist), and a timestamp sometime in the future after the end of the story, or sometime in the past before the story started, and I'll write you at least a hundred words of what happened then, whether it's five minutes before the story started or ten years in the future.

Everything including The Song of Yarru is fair game for this, although for it, I'll hold the mini-story until after TSoY is finished posting.

Okay ... not commenting on The Big News right now, because I need some processing time.  I'm not terribly surprised, though.

In the meantime, because I like a good writing meme, I snagged this from [livejournal.com profile] the_tenzo.  I don't tag people.  If you want to do it, do it.

Sometimes Always it's okay to pimp yourself out. Post a list of your top five fic-favorites you've written, regardless of fandom or the reason you love them. This isn't about the BEST things you've written, but what you LOVE most. Then tag five other people to do the same.

I carefully considered my master list for this, if you want to take a peek.  (Hey.  Pimping here.)

Proof somehow captured the exact mood and setting I wanted; Christmas at the monastery where Jacob lives.  I love writing the Doctor's interaction with faith, and the debate about Christmas between him and Jacob was delightful to write.  I think it holds up well.

It seems like everyone wrote a post-JE story of some kind, and yep, I did too.  All the same, I love The Quiet Chamber because it helped me mentally process the aftermath of that episode.  I also enjoy research and I think the little details in this story -- the speed of the jet, the flight times from Bergen to London, the football team in Bergen -- helped make it real.

The Little Ones needed a better title, but it illustrated an experience I was lucky enough to have.  "Write what you know" is hard in science fiction, but this is genuinely taken from my own life.

I love Navel Gazing because I wrote a story based on an Ig Nobel prize.  What's not to love?

And finally ... The Hidden Well, partly because I lived with it so long, and partly because I love the OCs in it and partly bccause it challenged me in a way that none of the other things I've written have done.  I naturally tend to write more character-driven pieces, and while I think I did a good job of characterization in the story, it was the plot that pushed me.  I also got to write the Doctor leaping a fence to get to Rose.  Yay.

If it were finished (grumble), I'd put my current WIP on this list.  It's gotten under my skin, too.

It's Banned Books Week and I thought it might make an interesting meme to go through the 100 most frequently challenged books of 1990-2000 and note which ones I've read (noted in italics).

My list. Not as many as I would have guessed. )

[livejournal.com profile] momacress requested chapter seventeen of The Calm Before the Storm, which tickled me. The whole purpose of this chapter was for them to have fun before they get serious and leave the monastery, and for me to geek out a bit. I think it worked fairly well on both those counts.

Commentary for [livejournal.com profile] glory_jean.  I've enjoyed doing them -- ask for more?

I had such a distinct mental image as the inspiration for this. It was originally written for a challenge at [livejournal.com profile] dwliterotica for a prompt of "the Moon."

Let me tell you first what a paraselene is. Apparently the more common name is the prosaic "moon dog," but I always referred to them as "moonbows." Technically, and somewhat embarrassingly, what I thought of as a paraselene is just a moon halo. Whoops. No, self, a paraselene occurs as part of a lunar halo, when there is a pair of bright spots along the ring at 22° to the left and ring. There is a corresponding phenomenon for the sun known as (guess what?) a sun dog or a parhelion.

I hate it when I get my science wrong. It's one thing to handwave it away on purpose, of course, which I do with considerable enthusiasm. Anyway, it isn't relevant to the story, which is really about Rose lying on her back on an alien planet staring into the sky, but it still annoys me.

For [livejournal.com profile] unfolded73 from the commentary meme.

This whole story came about because of a comment that the Doctor made to Rose in chapter fourteen of Voyages of Discovery. I played there with the amusing (to me) tendency of some of the male half of the species to wake up with an erection, which the Doctor doesn't. He tells Rose: "Doesn't work like that. I'm not an ape. It's a purely voluntary mechanism." Which begs the question: how voluntary is voluntary? And thus was born a naughty little story.

I'm almost embarrassed to admit that I only guessed 35 of the 100 most commonly used English words. How many can you get? This is a cool and surprisingly stressful test.

WIP meme

kalleah: (dw blue four panel)
Snagged from [personal profile] eponymous_rose, since I seem to have a truly ridiculous number of WIPs going at the moment.

When you see this, post snippets of all your works-in-progress.

A piece that ought to be a short vignette following The Hidden Well, featuring Emelia and Connor's newest arrival. Ten/Rose, although they don't make an appearance in this excerpt.

The long promised, slow coming story of Nine and Jacob after the Time War.

This one (as yet untitled, but up to 18,000 words for heaven's sake) is a Ten/Rose romance and adventure in the Process of Becoming series. (Some smut, too.)

And finally ... Ten II and Rose, following Journey's End. This one is virtually complete, I hope. I've sent it off for beta reading and hope to have it posted in the next few days. (Ha!)

kalleah: (sparkle)
So, we've established that I'm not all that great at this meme, so we decided that we'd do something totally different and play "stump [personal profile] platypus."  She'll be harder than I am, so good luck to you.  :)

Reply to this post with a quote from one of my fics. It can be anything from one sentence to a paragraph, depending on the context. Enough to give a person a fair shot at recognition. Then I will try to tell you which fic of mine it's from (without cheating and looking it up:)).

If you stump me utterly, I will write you a drabble of your choice.

If you can stump her, I'll write the drabble.  Hee.
kalleah: (e/f when I'm with you)
I bow to the will of [personal profile] misssara11 and will do the following meme.  My fic master list is here.

Comment and I'll give you a letter. In your journal, list 10 of your favourite songs that begin with that letter.

[personal profile] ivydoor gave me the letter R.  I pulled songs just off my iPod, as I figure everything really loved is there anyway.  These are in order of "ooh, yeah, that one," not necessarily any order of preference.

  1. "Respect," Aretha Franklin.
  2. "Rock and Roll All Night," Kiss.
  3. "Rock the Casbah," The Clash.
  4. "Rocket Man," Elton John.
  5. "Romeo and Juliet," Indigo Girls.  (Yes, I'm choosing the cover, not the Dire Straits original which I also have.)
  6. "Ruby Horse," the Wonder Stuff.
  7. "Russians," Sting.
  8. "River of Dreams," Billy Joel.
  9. "Rapture," Blondie.
  10. "Rest of the Day Off," Neil Finn.
